Teaching language:

English

Learning outcomes:

a) knowledge on history and interferences among architectural, art, computer science and mathematical theories;
b) knowledge of modern mathematics as important vehicle in the development of contemporary techniques in architecture;
c) brief introduction in operational research applied to architectural projects to meet clients requests in relationship with time, costs and construction rules and regulations.

Content:

Mathematical thinking and language have played an important role in the development of culture by influencing the way people view and conceptualize reality. The journey from natural to complex numbers and later to fractals, and the employment of algorithms in form generation, the shift in architecture from metric space to topological space changed the whole human history by changing the sense of the words “time” and “space”. The mathematical course inquires the way in which this evolution influences the creation and arrangements of forms and volumes in the architectural space, beginning with the first archaic civilizations until the end of the XX century. In light of these, the projects we develop are inspired from nature and the shapes/volumes are redesigned as actors of architectural spaces by experiencing concepts as: cellular automaton, Voronoi diagrams, fractal structures, topological transformations. Projects implementation is performed using Autodesk Maya 2016.
On the other hand, the discussions on contemporary architecture will be also approached as project management/operational research problems through a range of optimization techniques, referring to specialized software packages (ex. Autodesk Revit).

Teaching Method:

Customized lectures and applications

Assessment:

Project development - assessment during the semester and the final presentation (100%)
